Why I’m asking for your help (even though I feel so awkward doing it)

Making thoughtful work in a chaotic world takes more than passion—it takes people like you.

Hey there! It’s Josh.

I’m a PhD candidate studying emotion, creativity, and how people make sense of the world—especially when they don’t have all the answers.

Most of my writing lives in places like Psychology Today and peer-reviewed journals.

But this newsletter is something different.

It’s a way for me to write directly to you in a more personal way. And it’s a way for you to support my work if it’s ever helped you.

I’m building a life around research, writing, and curiosity. I love it. But the truth is, this kind of work doesn’t come with stability. I’m building this newsletter as a way to help keep my career going, while also giving back to the people who make it possible: you, the reader.

If anything I’ve written has helped you shift a perspective, name a feeling, or just feel a little less alone, this is how you can help me keep doing it.

Here’s what your support makes possible:

$3/month — Supporter
Covers my coffee. Keeps my brain moving. Tells me you’re out there, reading.

$17/month — Steady Hands
Provides me with a solid meal (FYI: my favourite comfort food is pho). This helps me breathe between long days of writing and research—and gives this work the consistency it needs.

$100/month — Big Ideas Backer
Funds a real night out with my partner, and creates space for long-haul projects like books, video essays, and whatever comes next.

What you'll get:

  • Personal updates on my research and process

  • Occasional messy drafts and side projects

  • Surprise bonuses after I finish my PhD

  • And the feeling that you’re helping something meaningful grow

Thanks for reading. Thank you for thinking deeply. And thank you for being here.

Truly.

— Josh
